January 2022 Letter From the Board

"...we continue to celebrate the huge success of past SNEF projects. The impact has been beyond measure. Five schools have been built (that can accommodate up to 1000 students), thousands of children have received a life changing education and because of your generosity we have transformed the lives of children."

A Letter From the Board

Dear Friends of the Saint Nektarios Education Fund,

This past year felt in many ways like a repeat of 2020. For those that we serve in rural Africa it was an incredibly difficult year. The disruptions caused by Covid were many. Not only were schools shut down, but so also were local marketplaces where many obtain their daily food.

In Uganda these disruptions were especially onerous. Fortunately, schools including those built by the St. Nektarios Education Fund in Uganda did reopen last spring.

You may recall that during the past two years The Saint Nektarios Education Fund (SNEF) undertook a massive renovation project in Northern Uganda. This $130,000 sanitation project in Gulu was designed to provide hygiene education and a much-needed upgrade to the Saint Michael Middle and High School campus. Below you will find photographs and detailed information about our work.

The scope of the project was finalized with our network partner of International Orthodox Christian Charities (IOCC) in September of 2020. Construction began soon thereafter but we faced numerous disruptions and stoppages due to the outbreak of Covid-19 in early 2021. The challenges delayed the completion of the project considerably. Fortunately, during 2021 this large-scale project was completed!

However, due to the travel restrictions imposed by the Ugandan government and political instability our on-site inspections and reports have not been completed. The last site visit by our IOCC network partner occurred in April of 2021. Since then, we have been monitoring progress remotely. We hope to conduct a physical inspection and complete a final inspection in the next couple of months.

Additionally, we have not been able to assess in-person how our schools are faring and what opportunities exist to improve and expand the education of the children we serve. Once again, our plan in 2022 is to reenter the country and evaluate how the schools are faring and how we can serve.

Of course, we continue to celebrate the huge success of past SNEF projects. The impact has been beyond measure. Five schools have been built (that can accommodate up to 1000 students), thousands of children have received a life changing education and because of your generosity we have transformed the lives of children. We are truly grateful for your incredible support!

If you wish to contribute you can do so at snef.org. We look forward to reengaging with you in 2022 and sharing more information as we receive it.

May God Bless you,

The Saint Netkarios Education Board
